CHAPTER FOURTEEN
Michael quietly called his best friend early the next morning.
“Hey, Kevin, meet me at the Bakery for a coffee later,” he said.
“Sure,” said the retired banker. “What time?”
“I’m here now and will be all day.”
Kevin’s eyes widened at his friend’s statement. Something was wrong...very wrong.
He woke his sleeping wife.
“Michael’s just called me. H wants me to meet him at the Bakery for coffee this morning. He’s already there and it’s only six forty five. He sounded stressed.”
“Then you better get dressed and go see what’s wrong, Kevin,” said Helen, squinting at the alarm clock. Her husband was right, it was before seven when their alarm went off.
Kevin got dressed in a hurry.
He walked into The Dockside Bakery fifteen minutes later. Michael made sure Millicent was engrossed in supervising the two girls and sat Kevin down at the table furthest from the kitchen.
“So what’s up?” asked Kevin.
“I think I need your help. You’ve no doubt heard from Cressi and Trent what happened?” said Michael quietly.
“The whole town knows what happened. Most exciting thing this month,” smiled Kevin. “You know Seascape Cove is a bed of gossip.”
“So what’s the story going round?”
“Milli slipped on her porch and broke her ankle.”
Michael snorted.
“She only sprained it. And she slipped on something oily. Trent thinks somebody deliberately spilled cooking oil on the steps. Cressi says it was used cooking oil. Now who would have used cooking oil around to spill on somebody’s steps, Mr. Sherlock Holmes?”
Kevin’s lips quirked in amusement.
“Not going to let me forget my amateurish detective attempts, are you?” he grinned.
“Hey, your amateur detecting caught the drug smugglers, man. You also helped catch that crooked antiques dealer from San Francisco, didn’t you? And that Chinese broad who took a shot at Trent! I think you were brilliant. So turn your attention to who’s trying to hurt my girlfriend.”
“I’ll be happy to help. But isn’t Trent investigating?”
“Yeah, but either he hasn’t turned up any clues or if he has, he isn’t sharing the information with me. I’ll sleep better if I know your keen mind is examining the problem in minute detail.”
Kevin nodded and sipped his coffee.
“Okay, so let’s examine the facts as we know them. Last month somebody broke into Millicent’s cottage and trashed her kitchen. They were leaving as she walked up the path and knocked her over. She didn’t recognize the man, but said he smelled of oregano, right?”
“Right,” said Michael. “However, Natalie and Barbie tell me Milli doesn’t seem to comprehend that marijuana and oregano smell very similar, and they think the culprit could be a pothead. The Police seem to think it could have been the people who rented
Blackberry Cottage last winter. They were pretty pissed when Stan Meredith wouldn’t let them stay in any of his rental properties this season, so maybe they broke in and trashed Milli’s place in anger. They both smoked a lot of weed, but...”
“But you don’t agree with that theory because only one guy rushed out,” finished Kevin.
“That’s right. Officer Schultz concluded
